Anatomy coverage

Patella and patellofemoral joint.

Tech pearls

  • Settegast = patient holds knee in maximum flexion; uncomfortable.
  • Merchant uses an axial board — better tolerated post-injury.

Image evaluation

  • PA: patella centered over distal femur, no rotation
  • Tangential: open patellofemoral joint

Common mistakes

  • AP instead of PA (magnifies patella)
  • Insufficient flexion for tangential

Trauma modifications

  • DO NOT force flexion in acute trauma — use horizontal beam lateral.
  • Suspected dislocation = no tangential.
